2014 Summer Hiatus

It's that time of year where the nice weather starts calling us outside - far away from desktop computers. So consider this to be a summer vacation of sorts.

See you in September if the demand for more Mass Spec is raging!

NOTEBOOK:

Peroxide formation is a REAL safety hazard that isn't necessary caused by questionable chocolate bearing anthropomorphic animals. For more information, check out http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/chemistry/solvents/learning-center/peroxide-formation.html

Happy Easter!

That's what you get for phrasing a question over the span of 4 minutes I suppose.

It is illegal to complete this riddle in 30 countries on the grounds that no human should have to endure something so awful. Luckily, we were spared today.

Little known fact: Bromoethylpandabenzene is very time sensitive and doesn't store well. Hopefully next time she thinks twice before trying to inject an undiluted glue sample just to "see what was in there".

NOTEBOOK:

All a QA department needs is a rehashed idea of an already established concept which creates a maximum amount of paperwork that needs completing by all staff. Preferably with a pronounceable acronym to make it seem fun.

Ah yes. That first lab experience where you are told to spike your QC and all you can think is, "Alright - I was hired by a party lab!"

And it's the return of the James Bond Reagent .

See Comic #6 for a little bit of history.

"Proficiency testing (PT) is the use of inter-laboratory comparisons to determine the performance of individual laboratories for specific tests or measurements and to monitor a laboratory’s performance." -SCC

These are samples that are super important for continuing to have a job and therefore must be perfect ... but we're still going to pretend that it's a regular old sample *wink wink nudge nudge*.

NOTEBOOK:

I was really disappointed when I was shown my first MSDS  (Material Safety Data Sheet ). I thought it would contain awesome and specific countermeasures to any type of harm that could visit you from using that particular chemical. Something like, "To prevent blindness and death from ingestion of methanol, just drink vast quantities of ethanol (in your favourite booze form) to out-compete the more toxic byproduct for a place on your enzymes." Yeah! Staying alive with science!

Sadly, 99% of the MSDSs I have seen so far basically read, "Maybe try some fresh air...and possibly talk to a doctor." Thanks. Big help.

This comic may or may not be inspired by real events ...

Although, that would be a legitimate (and vague) statement for anything that is posted.

Not sure how often to update. Might aim for a couple days a week for now and see how things go from there.

Ok - so now this space might actually serve a purpose. That didn't take too long did it?
